RECESS at the Davis Gallery

Across the US, we live an untenable lifestyle that relies on the continuous import of vital resources and the maintenance of large stockpiles of nuclear weapons. Chad Person's project engages the fears of a nation where terror alert levels are both ubiquitous and ignored. In this archive of photographs, video, DIY manuals, and prototypes, Person will teach you how to prepare yourself and your family to survive the end of your world.

The dominant themes of RECESS are the fragility of modern existence, the disaster survival arc, and the myth of the individual survivalist. For this exhibition, and as part of Person's increasing focus on the role of community in the survival equation, Person has introduced these themes to students in the HWS course Time in Art II. Student artistic responses will be exhibited alongside Person’s works.

Chad Person is a conceptual artist living in New Mexico. His dollar bill collages, inflatable sculptures, and other highly visible projects have appeared locally, nationally and internationally.

Time in Art II is an intermediate course in video and installation in the HWS Department of Art and Architecture taught by Professor Christine Chin. Participants include: Reina Apraez, Josh Cerf, Anita Cheung, Emily Desmery, Elizabeth Perry, Jose Rodrigez, Imani Schectman, and Jenny Wu.

RECESS: Surviving the End of Your World is made possible through the support of the Davis Gallery at Houghton House and a grant from the Center for Teaching and Learning.
